Countdown to sunday

“I can hardly wait,” Lia e-mails me. Just a few days before we’ll see her and Coby again! Right there, on that same spot where they had to leave us 39 years ago after a long trip from Indonesia. At Schiphol (the airport). That’s where our reunion will take place. Initially, our intention was for Victor and I to visit our guardian angels in Bergen op Zoom, where Lia and Coby still live after all these years. But Google Maps laughed at us: yes, for me it would only be a 1,5 hour drive. But –…

The perks of being a peanut

“Peanut!” That’s what children – especially boys – my age called me sometimes. As an adult, I can’t think of a sweeter nickname. But as a child it could hurt me tremendously. It felt like a dirty word. A curse. It meant that I was different. That I came from another country. I had a different skin color. A different history. Being different is lonely at that age. I grew up in Zeeland. As one of the few colored children in the small town where I lived. But I got used…

The Northern Daily

Good morning! After reading the announcement on the Facebook page of the Dagblad van het Noorden (Northern Daily), I suddenly feared the worst. Because if they were mistaken about our age (hello, 40 ??)… and they described Lia and Coby as tourists who picked us up at Schiphol …? For me it was exactly the reason why Saturday I asked for a preview of the article. For some fact-checking. Unfortunately the journalist said there would be no time for such, which made me a little nervous. Fortunately, this announcement appeared to be written by…

The reunion

What made our reunion somewhat uncomfortable was the camera crew from RTV Noord that was practically on top of me when I got out of the car. I believe a director would call it ‘filming at an appropriate distance’.(Makes me curious what shooting at an inappropriate distance looks like. But that aside.) The attention our story is getting in the media is insane. Journalists from the AD and the Dagblad van het Noorden visited us this afternoon. Is always a surprise how a story ends up in black and white. Which statements are…

Wendy Maria, the musical

My dear friend and top Photoshop-artist Suus app’s me with a ‘brilliant idea’. There should be a musical! On a peanut searching for her roots. To get me motivated on that idea Suus has already designed the poster. A lot of laughing and joking smileys go back and forth. But if I have to be honest I think it’s a seriously good idea. Let me dream about that. Good night everyone!

The birth of Indowees

A lot had happened since my call on Facebook. If there’s anything I could determine, it was that so many people sympathized with me. Thousands. I got new friend requests from people who wanted to follow my quest. They literally asked me to tell more about my story. My search began last November when I first contacted the My Roots Foundation. And actually even far before that. All my life I’ve been searching for ‘family’. Long before I started an actual search, in a way I was searching. As a child I was trying to find…

A beautiful star in the sky

Today I learned Mrs. Vijverberg has deceased. Two weeks ago I got the chance to talk to her on the phone. I am so grateful for that opportunity. I wasn’t too late this time, like I was when searching for my biological mother. “It was meant to be,” daughter K. Vijverberg says. Rest in peace, dear lady Vijverberg. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking care of me – even if it were only for a few weeks – in Indonesia.

And the press…

Besides BN De Stem other media are interested in our story also. The Dagblad van het Noorden (literal translation: daily of the north) wants to interview Victor, seeing he lives in the provence of Groningen (=in the north of the Netherlands). AD wants to write a story shedding a light on several sides of our story. I like that idea most. And RTV Noord is planning on filming our reunion. They’re going to report live when Victor and I meet again after 39 years. As it looks now, our reunion weekend in Groningen will be buzzing.
