Nina Bobo, Somewhere over the rainbow & Indonesia Raya

A box of tissues would have come in handy. Yesterday the second My Roots Foundation-meeting took place at the Ambassy of Indonesia in The Hague. Finally I saw my ‘brothers and sisters’ again. Feels special. In the days before musical multi-talent Sander Metz and I had rehearsed our performance we were requested to give. That is: we sent each other mp4’s. Cause with both a full agenda and a long distance in between our residences, we decided this would work as a rehearsal also. And it did. Somehow we just manage to ‘find each other’…

Peanuts & croquettes

Today I went to a meeting of My Roots Foundation in Utrecht. For the first time I met Ana, Christine and Corianne (who recently started to work for My Roots) in the flesh. What an experience to be among dozens of other adoptees from Indonesia! First there was Sander. A fellow adoptee but also fellow musician. Christine had asked us to perform a song together. And although we hadn’t met until today, let alone rehearsed together, on stage it felt as though we often performed together. I met Marianna. The incredible coincidence is, that she now…

I have a sister!

I was prepared for anything. Or so I thought. I had even already given up hope my mother would still be alive. Never could I have imagined an outcome quite this ironic: my mom dying just 6 days before My Roots knocked on her door on my behalf. SIX DAYS. I learned that my mother – right after she had brought me to Jakarta to give me up for adoption – changed her mind and tried to get me back. I can feel her pain as I think about that….

Mail correspondence with My Roots

Bennebroek, January 13 Hi Ana and Christine, I am quite curious how our search is progressing. Of course we are only just starting, so my expectations are low at the moment. Sincerely, Wendy   Wanneperveen, January 14 Hi Wendy! It is of course not a problem that you request an update; please feel free to do this whenever you want. I know that they made the trip, but what the results are, or what next steps are planned, are not yet known. I will follow up immediately and let you know…

My face on a poster

A friendly Asian woman holding a baby in her arms. The baby, that’s me. The woman, that’s Martha Chen. This image is so familiar to me. As long as I can remember, this picture of Martha and me has been in my photo album. On the first page, next to my birth announcement. How bizarre to see our faces on a digital ‘wanted’-poster now. It is part of the action-plan of My Roots. Through social media, they are now trying to track down Martha. Ana will also distribute these posters in the…

YES! I’m gonna search for my roots!

After long deliberation (38 years that is) I now have finally decided to start my search. No, I’m not planning to go to Indonesia myself. Not yet. Rather, I call on the help of an organization that actually has some experience in searching for biological family abroad. That has a network in Indonesia and speaks the language well. Who knows which people and organizations you need to approach and how. Just sent an e-mail to My Roots (Mijn Roots). My Roots was recently founded by Ana Maria and Christine. Two Dutch…
